TOYOTA FUEL INJECTION

The engines in some Toyota vehicles are equipped with a fuel injection system known as the Direct Injection 4 Stroke Gasoline Engine Superior Version, or D4S. It combines the advantages of both direct and port type fuel injection to achieve improved engine performance, fuel economy and reduced emissions. A traditional port fuel injection system injects fuel into the intake airflow upstream of the intake valves for each cylinder under relatively low pressure. A direct fuel injection system delivers fuel under high pressure directly into the combustion Chamber of each cylinder. The D4S system incorporates both port and direct fuel injection by controlling the fuel injectors according to engine load. The result is enhanced drivability with crisp response to accelerator inputs by the driver. Under low to medium engine loads, which encompass most normal driving conditions, both the direct and port type fuel injectors are used together, contributing to stable combustion, low fuel consumption and low emissions. In high engine load operating ranges, such as hard acceleration or steep hill climbing, only the direct fuel injection is used. Direct injection causes the fuel to become highly atomized and spread over a wide fan shaped area, mixing with the air inside the combustion chamber. When operating using direct injection, the chilling effect of the injected fuel helps cool the intake air, improving fuel air charging efficiency and helping avoid engine knock while increasing engine output. The combined effect of the D4S system helps improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, stabilize combustion, realize high engine output, and enhanced drivability.
