Today I would like to take a few minutes to talk to you about Earth Day and an important initiative in our lab. 1,2.3,4https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/earth-day-timeline Earth Day thru the years 1970 Concept to bring environmental concerns to forefront1 50th anniversary theme was climate action4 1990 20th Earth Day celebrated2 1975 Moms class plants a tree 2000 184 countries participate3 2020 Blank Earth Day began in 1970 as a concept to create a platform for bringing environmental concerns to the forefront. Twenty million people participated in the first Earth Day activities in the U.S. In 1975, my mom’s seventh grade class planted a tree to celebrate Earth Day. By 1990, the 20th anniversary of Earth Day was a global event with participation by individuals in over 140 countries. Earth days 30th anniversary was in the year 2000, there was a focus on Clean Energy with 184 countries participating which equaled hundreds of millions of people. Most recently, in 2020 it was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Can you believe it! 50 years and the theme was climate action honoring the worldwide efforts to halt global warming. All over the world, countries, corporations, and individuals are doing things to help save our environment. We can all do our part. I would like to take a moment and explain about an initiative close to my heart. Paper reduction. I want to explain a bit how we are moving away from paper in my lab to support this initiative and becoming good stewards of the planet. Before that though, let me go to my blackboard and share with you some statistics about paper and printing, that I just recently learned about from my coworker, Nat. Did you know… Fifty percent of business waste is paper?1 Large amount of water used in paper production2 93 percent of paper comes from trees3 1,2.3https://www.theworldcounts.com/stories/paper-waste-facts For more statistics please view our attached resource. Blank Did you know that fifty percent of all business waste is paper based? While production of one piece of paper uses between 2 liters and 13 liters of water depending on the mill. That's a lot of water! And another fact that I did not realize is that 93 percent of paper development is still coming from trees. Really makes you think. Right? I love paper but I love our planet more. For more statistics on printing please view our attached resource. Ask Sandy Question: “Sandy why do you always carry your tablet?” Ask Sandy Dear Sandy, Why do you always carry your tablet? Ciao, Mario Sandy Lab P.S. – I love the digital postcard Blank So, I mentioned earlier that we can all do our part to help the planet and that our lab is focusing on paper reduction. Let me begin to tell you more about what we are doing. Recently someone asked me via a digital postcard to my ask Sandy mailbox the following question. Sandy. why do you always carry your tablet? Ciao Mario. Ask Sandy Answer: In my lab we have moved away from paper and our supervisor has been really supportive of us using PEPconnect on our devices. Blank Dear Mario, First I must say I am so happy to know that there is global interest in my Day in the Life of the Lab Series! Also, I would love to answer your question and tell you why I am always carrying my tablet. In my lab we have moved away from paper. We no longer post paper printouts in our lab that can become outdated. My supervisor is so supportive of this initiative and really encourages all of us to access PEPconnect on our devices. Having this digital access helps us reduce the amount of printing and waste produced that negatively impacts our environment. While ensuring that we are always using the most updated content available. Content Available Digitally Must have Internet connection to access Blank With PEPconnect we have access to great content. Inside the lab or out, you can access what you need digitally, from the PEPconnect family of content that features thousands of easily searchable artifacts, even those that feature familiar faces! You can even review over again what you need without having to print anything out. The PEPconnect content is easily consumable. It is great to have paperless choices! Positive Impact “Siemens Healthineers is really providing a great help to the environment. By offering more virtual training experiences and more digital content they have really helped with providing our lab with less of a carbon footprint. I feel good about that and feel good that my employees are getting what they need to do a great job – spending less time and using less paper. Thumbs up Siemens Healthineers!” - Sandy’s Lab Supervisor Blank As I have mentioned earlier, we are so fortunate that we have the support of our supervisor. Please, take a moment to read a quote from him about the positive impact that Siemens Healthineers is making not only in our lab but on the environment. My best advice for paper reduction: Say NO to printing Continued development of great digital content Become a Steward of the Environment Check out PEPconnect for yourself Blank So, my best advice for paper reduction is threefold. One. just say no to printing. Two. for Siemens Healthineers to continue the great work by creating easily consumable digital content, and finally, three. Be like me, become a Steward of the Environment, by reducing waste where you can on Earth Day and every day. Every little bit helps.
